The Camerons memorial stands on Culloden Battlefield near Inverness, a sobering reminder of the 1746 clash that changed Scotland forever. This isn't a visitor attraction in the traditional sense - it's a stone cairn marking where Clan Cameron fell, part of the wider National Trust for Scotland site that covers the entire moor where Bonnie Prince Charlie's Jacobite forces were decimated by government troops.

Walking the battlefield itself is what makes this worthwhile. The moor is bleak, wind-swept, and genuinely moving. You'll understand why the battle unfolded as it did - there's nowhere to hide, nowhere to shelter. The memorial cairns scattered across the grass each mark where particular clans took their stand. The Camerons' stone is one of many, but if your family has Highland roots this becomes personal, emotional ground.

It's free to wander the moor, though the visitor centre charges admission and is worth the few quid for context. Allow at least two hours if you're doing the full walk. Summer's best for comfort, but winter lends an appropriately grim atmosphere. This isn't a day out - it's a pilgrimage, really.
