The walking trails at Cambourne Nature Reserve loop through proper woodland and open grassland east of Huntingdon, offering a decent afternoon's escape from the A14 if you're staying nearby. You'll find paths that wind through mixed habitat - ponds, scrubby vegetation, the occasional glimpse of something worthwhile birdwise. It's not dramatic or unexpected, but it works.

For families with young legs, the reserve is manageable. The trails don't demand serious fitness or hiking boots, though they can get muddy in winter. Kids will spot the odd muntjac deer if you're patient, and the pond areas occasionally reward you with dragonflies. Birdwatchers might recognise some warblers in spring, but don't expect a day-long spectacle.

The honest assessment: it's serviceable. If you're based at Crystal Lakes Leisure six or so miles away, this won't set your holiday on fire, but it fills an hour or two without fuss. The reserve lacks the drama of proper fenland reserves elsewhere in Cambridgeshire, and the proximity to Huntingdon's suburban sprawl rather undercuts the sense of escape.
