Calstock Quay

The Tamar Valley railway viaduct dominates the skyline at Calstock Quay, a Victorian engineering marvel that somehow manages to be both imposing and elegant. Walk down to the water's edge and you're standing on the Devon bank of the Tamar, watching the river bend around a proper working quay where boats still come and go. It's the sort of place that rewards simply turning up and spending an hour poking about.

The viaduct itself is worth the trip if you're into industrial heritage - built in 1908 with twelve stone arches, it carries the Tamar Valley Line across to Cornwall and hasn't changed much since. From the quay, the perspective is brilliant: the structure looms overhead, trains occasionally rumble across, and you get that satisfying sense of how the Victorians actually built things. The river views are proper lovely, especially on a clear day when you can see across to the Cornish side.

This works well for walkers tackling the Tamar Valley - it's accessible and genuinely atmospheric, though don't expect facilities or food stands. Families with older kids will find it interesting rather than thrilling; younger ones might get restless after thirty minutes. Free to visit, and it plugs nicely into a broader holiday park stay at either Sunnyside Eco Glamping or Woodovis, both three and a bit miles away near Tavistock. Spring and early summer are best when the riverside foliage's full and the light hits the viaduct properly.
