Calshot Spit Country Park

The shingle spit that juts into the Solent is properly exposed to the elements - which is exactly why it's worth the trip from Southampton. Calshot stretches out like a natural barrier, with views across to the New Forest on one side and open water on the other. You're looking at a working landscape here: there's the old castle keep (Henry VIII's defences, still standing), a lifeboat station, and miles of single-track beach that shifts with every storm.

Walkers get the most from it. The spit path is straightforward enough, though wind can make it feel longer than it is. Birdwatchers come for the terns and waders that use the foreshore - spring and autumn migrations are peak times. Families with younger children might find it a bit bleak and exposed compared to prettier beaches, though older kids enjoy the scramble over shingle and the sense of wildness.

There's no charge to wander the reserve itself. Allow two to three hours if you're doing the full circuit and actually looking at things rather than rushing. Bring a windproof jacket; it's not as sheltered as the Isle's southern beaches.

If you're based at Sunnycott Caravan Park or Comforts Farm nearby, Calshot works as a proper half-day escape from holiday park routines. It's not flashy or manicured, which is its strength. Real coastal reserve feel, especially out of season when the car park empties and you can hear the shingle shift beneath your feet.
