It's not a destination that demands hours of your time. What you get is a decent walk around the shoreline, the chance to spot waterfowl if you're patient, and views that roll outward across the Mourne foothills. The lough itself feels working rather than showpiece - no visitor centre, no facilities to speak of, just water and hills and quiet.

This appeals most to walkers and landscape photographers. If you're after postcard drama, you'll find more of it a few miles south in the Mourne Mountains proper. But if you want something genuinely low-key, away from the coach routes and without the effort of a proper fell walk, it delivers. You can work a circuit here in an hour or so depending on the path conditions.

Newry is ten minutes' drive for supplies and a pint afterwards. The lough works best as part of a broader Mourne exploration rather than a stand-alone visit, but it's worth knowing about if you're in the area.
