Cake Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Hungerford, Cake Wood is the kind of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's modest - no visitor centre, no facilities, just trees and paths that feel genuinely quiet even on weekends. The woodland itself is mixed broadleaf, quiet underfoot, with enough shade to keep things cool on warm days.

It's decent for families with older kids who can handle a longer walk without constant stimulation. Younger ones might get bored after half an hour unless you make a game of spotting wildlife. Dog walkers seem to be the real regulars here - the place has that feel of somewhere locals know about rather than tourists queuing to get in.

You won't spend more than a couple of hours here unless you're properly into nature spotting or photography. The paths are straightforward enough, though they can get muddy after rain. There's no charge as far as I can tell, and no set opening hours - it's the kind of place you access on foot from the surrounding footpath network. Free parking if you can find a spot along the lanes nearby.

If you're staying at Lorne Hill Farm just down the road, it's an easy leg-stretch between longer activities. Don't come expecting views or dramatic vistas. Come for the quiet and the chance to actually hear yourself think away from the usual tourist spots.
