Cairnmount Hill

The walk up Cairnmount Hill takes you through proper moorland, the sort of terrain that makes you remember why you came to Ayrshire in the first place. It's not a massive undertaking - more of a solid afternoon's work than an all-day expedition - but the views back towards the coast justify every muddy step.

Once you're up there, the plateau opens out nicely. On a clear day you get a real sense of the Ayrshire landscape rolling away beneath you, with glimpses of the Firth of Clyde if you're lucky. The moorland itself is what holds your attention though - heather, rough grass, the occasional weathered stone. It feels properly wild without being inaccessible.

This is a walk rather than a destination with facilities. Bring your own supplies and decent boots. An hour or so on the summit is about right unless you're the sort who sits and sketches for hours. Families with teenagers will find it manageable; younger kids might struggle with the moorland terrain underfoot.
