Cairn Vachich

The walk up Cairn Vachich from Strathdon takes you into proper hill country without the crowds you'd find further west in the main Cairngorms range. It's a modest peak by Highland standards, but the approach through open moorland gives you views across Aberdeenshire that feel genuinely remote once you're past the initial climb.

Allow three to four hours for a steady round trip. The terrain is boggy in places - waterproof boots essential - but the gradient is manageable rather than punishing. You'll get decent panoramic views once you're up there, looking back down into the Don valley and across to the wider massif beyond. On a clear day it's a satisfying outing; in cloud cover, frankly, you're paying for the walk rather than the summit.

This one suits hillwalkers after a morning out without needing to commit to a full mountain day. Families with older kids (teenagers with decent fitness) will manage it. Serious peak baggers will find it routine. The real value lies in combining it with other days in the area - if you're staying at Cairngorms Glamping & Campsite just down the road, it's an excellent local option that doesn't require the drive to more famous peaks.

The path starts near Strathdon itself, so logistics are straightforward. Check conditions before heading out; the exposed sections can be unwelcoming in bad weather. It's free to go, as are most Scottish hills, and you'll likely have the summit to yourself.
