Cairn O'Mohr Winery

The winery sits just outside Perth, and it's one of those places you'd miss entirely if someone hadn't tipped you off. Cairn O'Mohr makes fruit wines - not grape wines, which is the whole point really. We're talking elderflower, blackcurrant, raspberry, that sort of thing. The operation is small and genuinely Scottish, which you can taste in every bottle.

You can visit and try before you buy, which is the sensible way to approach it. Some of their wines are properly excellent; others are a bit of an acquired taste. Don't expect a grand chateau experience - this is more about the product than the setting. The staff know what they're on about, mind you, and they'll happily talk you through what works and what doesn't.

It's worth the stop if you're staying at Snugs at Logie Farm, only a few miles south, or using South Valleyfield as your base. Budget an hour if you're actually going to taste properly, less if you're just grabbing a bottle and moving on. The fruit wines make decent gifts, and the elderflower has a genuine following.

Not a full afternoon's entertainment on its own, but pair it with exploring Perth's town centre or a walk along the Tay, and you've got something solid. Best visited during warmer months when the fruit harvest is recent and the stock is at its liveliest.
