Cainhoe Castle Hill

A grassy mound in the middle of Hertfordshire farmland doesn't sound thrilling, but Cainhoe Castle Hill is genuinely worth a detour if you're staying nearby. What you're looking at is a Norman motte - essentially an 11th-century fortification that's been quietly sitting here for nearly a thousand years, abandoned and overgrown but still commanding the landscape around Henlow.

The site itself is free and accessible, though there's not much infrastructure to speak of. You can walk up the mound in under five minutes, and the views across the countryside are decent enough. It's the historical weight of the place that gets you - this was someone's power base, their statement of control, and it's survived longer than most of the families who built it.

Walkers will appreciate it as a short leg in a longer ramble. Families with young kids might find it underwhelming after ten minutes unless you're genuinely into archaeology and can conjure up what this looked like when it was properly fortified. History types will enjoy the tangible connection to Norman England, that period when French-speaking invaders were literally stamping their authority on the landscape with earth and timber.

Going solo or as a couple makes most sense. If you're based at Henlow Bridge Lakes just down the road, it's an easy addition to a morning walk - but don't plan your holiday around it. The real value is context: standing here and understanding how the Norman conquest changed the physical geography of England.
