Caaf Reservoir sits in the rolling Ayrshire landscape, a proper working water body that's become rather pleasant for a walk if you're staying nearby. It's not some fancy visitor attraction with gift shops and ice cream vans - just a stretch of water surrounded by grassland and the occasional tree, the sort of place locals know about and tourists sometimes stumble upon.

The walk around it takes a good hour, depending on how many times you stop to watch the water or hunt for birdlife. On a clear day you get decent views across to the surrounding hills. It's genuinely worth doing if you're based at Parkdean Resorts Sandylands just down the road - keeps the kids occupied for an afternoon without requiring entry fees or any faffing about with opening times.

Bring proper footwear though. The paths can be muddy, especially after rain, and there's nothing here in the way of facilities or shelter. This is countryside walking, not a manicured country park. If your family enjoys simple walks and spotting ducks rather than theme parks, you'll find it worthwhile. Those after dramatic landscapes or major attractions should probably head elsewhere - it's pleasant rather than spectacular, a decent add-on to a holiday rather than a reason to visit Ayrshire on its own.
