Butt's Wood

Ancient woodland doesn't get much more atmospheric than Butt's Wood, a proper slice of Hampshire forest just outside Petersfield. The trees tower overhead, blocking out most of the sky, and the ground underfoot is soft with centuries of leaf litter - it's the kind of place where you half expect to bump into something from a fairy tale.

What you're actually doing here is walking. There are paths threading through the woodland, some clearer than others, and they're quiet enough that you'll hear birds properly instead of traffic. It's not a manicured forest park with interpretive boards at every turn. This is the real deal - muddy in places, dense in others, genuinely easy to get lost if you ignore the occasional marker.

Families with older kids will find it engaging. Younger ones might tire quickly unless they're the type who like poking about in undergrowth looking for things. History buffs should note the woodland has medieval origins, though you won't find many obvious remains. Serious walkers can lose themselves for a couple of hours here without much effort.

It's free to access and open year-round, though winter's probably your best bet - fewer insects, clearer sightlines, less mud. Allow 90 minutes minimum if you're not rushing. Both Woodlands Camping and Hampshire Hills are within easy reach, making this a solid morning or afternoon excursion between longer park-based relaxation. Just bring proper footwear and don't expect facilities.
