Butser Hill National Nature Reserve

The chalk downland around Butser Hill rolls out like something from a chalk-drawing - proper open country with views that stretch all the way to the South Downs on a clear day. It's a nature reserve, so you're here for the landscape and wildlife rather than facilities, but that's exactly what makes it worth the drive from Petersfield.

Walkers will get the most from this. The hill itself climbs steeply in places, and the paths crisscross through grassland where you'll spot skylarks, kestrels, and in summer, butterflies in genuine numbers. The chalk flora is the real draw if you're into plants - horseshoe vines, bird's-foot trefoil, all the things that thrive on poor soil. Families with older kids will find it decent, but it's not a toddler-friendly spot. Plan for two to three hours if you're doing a proper walk rather than a quick loop.

There's no visitor centre or café, and it's free to access. The ground can be muddy after rain despite the chalk, so decent boots help. Early morning is best if you want to see wildlife without crowds.

It works well alongside the glamping options nearby - Adhurst Yurts and Glamping at Wallops Wood are both within 5 miles, and Cedar Valley's a shade closer. This is proper downland walking rather than a destination on its own, but if you're staying locally and want a half-day on foot with genuine views, it delivers.
