A proper woodland walk rather than a manicured nature reserve, Bushes Wood sits just outside Henley-on-Thames and delivers the kind of forest that feels like you've stumbled into something real. Ancient oaks, dense undergrowth, and paths that fork off without warning - it's the sort of place where you actually need to pay attention to where you're going.

The wood works best for walkers who want to disappear for an hour or two without crowds. It's not somewhere you pop into for a quick loop; come prepared for proper tramping through leaf litter and negotiating roots. Families with older kids will do fine, though toddlers might find the uneven terrain frustrating. History buffs could spend time working out the wood's age from the tree distribution, but don't expect information boards or interpretive signs.

No entrance fee as far as anyone can tell - it's the kind of accessible woodland that welcomes boots and dogs in equal measure. Allow an hour minimum if you're doing a proper circuit, longer if you're the type to stop and identify plants.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan sites - Bella Vista or Home Farm Glamping are both solid options within five miles - Bushes Wood makes a proper alternative to the Thames Path. It's genuinely worth the short drive from your pitch, particularly early morning when you've got the place to yourself. Not Instagram-friendly, and better for it.
