Bury Hill Camp

You'll need proper walking boots for this one. Bury Hill Camp is an Iron Age hillfort tucked into the Gloucestershire countryside near Wotton-under-Edge, and frankly it's more about the walk than any visible structure. The earthworks are still there if you know what to look for - concentric rings of ditches and banks that once formed a defensive settlement - but centuries of ploughing and weather have softened them considerably.

History types will find it worthwhile, especially if you're already exploring the Cotswolds. The site itself doesn't demand hours, maybe forty minutes to circle the ramparts and get a sense of the scale. What makes it worth the detour is the views across the Vale of Gloucester. On a clear day you're looking south over proper open countryside.

Access is free and straightforward from Wotton-under-Edge, though there's no formal visitor infrastructure - no cafe, no interpretation boards, nothing. You're essentially walking across farmland to a lumpy field. That's either appealing or a bit disappointing depending on what you expect. Families with older kids who don't mind a decent hike will appreciate it. Younger children might lose interest quickly once they realize there are no ruins to clamber on.

If you're staying at Wixoldbury Farm Glamping nearby, it makes a decent afternoon circuit combined with a walk into Wotton-under-Edge itself. Go midweek if possible - weekends can get muddy and churned up.
