Bury Down Hillfort

You won't find gift shops or information boards at Bury Down Hillfort - just Iron Age earthworks rising above the Cornish countryside near Trenedden, and a proper sense of standing where people actually lived two thousand years ago. The fort consists of a series of defensive banks and ditches that loop around the hilltop, still dramatically visible despite the centuries. The views across the surrounding farmland are genuinely excellent, particularly if you time it right and the light's soft.

Walkers will find this rewarding. It's not a strenuous climb, but you're moving through open ground with genuine archaeology beneath your feet rather than looking at something behind glass. History types get the real appeal here - you can trace the layout of the settlement, spot where the entrances would have been, imagine the effort that went into digging those defences. Kids might manage an hour if they're the sort who like clambering over banks and playing in ancient spaces, but don't expect them entertained for a full afternoon.

There's no admission charge and no opening hours to worry about - it's accessible land. Allow an hour to properly walk the perimeter and absorb what you're looking at. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Tencreek or Waterside near Tregoad, both within five miles, this makes a solid addition to a day exploring the area. Best visited on a clear day when you can actually see the earthworks properly. Wet weather makes the banks slippery and the whole experience considerably less pleasant.
