Burslem Park

The lake at Burslem Park is what draws you in first - proper serene for somewhere so close to Stoke-on-Trent's urban sprawl. You get woodland walking trails that wind around the water, and they're gentle enough that you won't be knackered after twenty minutes, but interesting enough to keep you moving for a solid hour or more.

It's a nature reserve, so birdwatchers come here regularly and actually see things worth seeing. The paths are well-maintained, with benches dotted about if you need a breather. Family groups do well here - kids can burn energy without you worrying they'll get properly lost, and there's enough to look at that they won't whinge about being bored after ten minutes.

The whole thing has that local-treasure feel rather than a polished attraction. You won't find a visitor centre or a shop, which is either refreshing or annoying depending on your mood. Allow a couple of hours if you're going at a proper pace, less if you just fancy a quick loop around the lake.

If you're based at Castle Camping nearby, this makes for an excellent morning walk before heading into Stoke for lunch. It's close enough to combine easily with other park visits in the area, but different enough - quieter, more nature-focused - that it doesn't feel repetitive. The woodland gives proper shelter too, which matters more than you'd think on a drizzly Midlands afternoon.
