Burrough's Wood

Walk into Burrough's Wood and you're in proper Lancashire woodland - the sort of place where the light filters through beech and oak in a way that makes you forget you're barely four miles from Southport's promenade. It's a genuine forest, not a manicured trail system, which means it feels a bit wild even if you're only ten minutes in.

The main appeal here is straightforward: if you need to stretch your legs and get under tree cover without driving far from the coast, this delivers. There are paths threading through, though they're not marked with the precision of a managed country park. Expect muddy patches after rain, roots to watch your step on, and the occasional moment where you lose the path entirely before finding it again. Walkers will find it absorbing for an hour or two. Families with younger kids might get restless once the novelty of "proper woods" wears off after thirty minutes or so.

It's free to access, naturally, and there's no formal visiting arrangement to speak of - you just turn up. Best visited in spring when the woodland floor is green, or autumn when the canopy colours up. Summer can feel a bit airless under the dense leaf cover.

If you're based at Southport Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, this is a useful local option for breaking up a seaside week. It won't compete with your time at the seafront, but as a morning walk before hitting the beach, it's worth knowing about.
