Burrough Farm

A working farm turned nature reserve on the outskirts of Bideford, Burrough Farm gives you proper access to Devon's quieter countryside without the crowds you'll find at the more famous spots. The reserve manages a mix of woodland, grassland and wetland - the kind of place where you'll actually spot something rather than just walk past trees for two hours.

It's genuinely good for families who don't mind a bit of mud. Kids can burn energy on the various trails, and you've got a decent chance of seeing birds and small mammals if you're patient and keep the noise down. Walkers will find it a straightforward afternoon outing rather than a full-day expedition.

The farm connection means the place feels lived-in and purposeful - not a sterile nature reserve with information boards every ten metres. That said, you'll want to check ahead about access arrangements before you arrive, as opening times and facilities aren't immediately clear.

Based near Bideford, it slots nicely into a holiday if you're staying at Braddicks Holiday Park or Owl Valley Glamping. Both are within easy reach, which means you can combine a morning here with exploring the town's waterfront or heading to Broad Park Camping and Glamping's neighbouring attractions. Allow a couple of hours minimum, longer if you're serious about wildlife spotting. Winter and early spring are your best bets for birdlife.
