Burntwood Hill

The walk up Burntwood Hill rewards you with proper Surrey views - rolling countryside spreading out in all directions, and on a clear day you can pick out the North Downs properly. It's not a massive peak, but that's rather the point. From Warlingham it's an accessible climb without needing crampons or special kit, making it a decent half-hour detour if you're in the area.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The summit itself isn't sprawling - you won't spend hours up here - but the approach through the woodland is pleasant enough, and families with decent-aged kids will find it manageable. Bring binoculars if you're into spotting landmarks. There's nothing built on top, no café, no facilities, just the view and fresh air.

Time-wise, allow an hour return from the nearest car parking. It's free to visit, obviously - it's a hill. Best tackled outside peak summer weekends when the paths aren't rammed with day-trippers from London.

If you're basing yourself at Milberry Green Meadows or Alderstead Heath Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite nearby, Burntwood Hill makes a solid morning walk before doing something else in the area. It's the sort of modest peak that locals know rather than tourists, which isn't a criticism - sometimes that's exactly what you want.
