Burnturk Muir

The forest at Burnturk Muir sits just outside Cupar and offers the kind of straightforward woodland walk that works well when you've had enough of attractions and just need some air. There's nothing fancy here - it's a proper working forest with decent tracks that loop through mature trees, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think.

What you get is space and quiet. The walks are manageable for families with kids, though younger ones might find a full circuit a bit much. Most people allow between one and two hours depending on which route you take. It's free to roam, which is the main appeal - no entrance fees, no gift shop nonsense.

This works well as a half-day break if you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks - The Rings and Silverburn Park are both within easy reach, and it saves you the cost of another ticketed attraction. The forest is decent in any season, though autumn is when it properly earns its keep with the colour. Spring brings bluebells if you time it right.

Honestly, it's not a destination in itself. You won't regret the visit, but you wouldn't travel an hour out of your way for it either. What it does brilliantly is slot into a Fife holiday when you want something low-key between bigger days out. Bring boots if it's been wet - the paths can get boggy in places.
