Burnhope Dam

Water stretches out surprisingly still on a grey Durham morning, held back by Burnhope Dam just outside Bishop Auckland. It's a straightforward reservoir - nothing flashy, no visitor centre, just a working piece of infrastructure that happens to sit in decent walking country. The dam itself is a modest concrete affair, but the real draw is the walk around the water. You get good views across the lake, and on a clear day the surrounding moorland rolls away properly. Walkers get the most from it. The circuit takes a couple of hours depending on your pace, and it's flat enough that families with kids can manage it without complaint. There's a bit of wildlife interest too - you'll spot the odd heron if you're quiet, and the water attracts various birds depending on season. The whole place has that understated northern feel - nobody's trying to turn it into a theme park, and frankly that's refreshing. Free to access. Nearest facilities are back in Bishop Auckland itself.
