Burnham Overy Staithe harbour

The harbour at Burnham Overy Staithe pulls you in gradually - you don't get dramatic cliffs or grand Victorian piers here. What you get is something quieter: a working Norfolk creek where wooden boats still moor, salt marshes stretch behind, and the light does peculiar things depending on the tide and time of day.

It's basically a proper sailing village that hasn't been flattened by tourism. The staithe itself - that's the landing place - is where you'll find fishermen moving about their business and the occasional cafe doing decent coffee. Walk around the harbour edge and you'll spot old boat sheds, mooring posts, and the kind of views that make you understand why people have lived here for centuries. The beach access is decent enough, sand and shingle running back towards the dunes.

Walkers love it because there are good paths west towards Burnham Deepdale, and the Norfolk Coast Path runs through here too. History types will appreciate the medieval church just back from the water. Kids? They'll get an hour of poking about in rock pools and watching boats, then want feeding.

It's free to wander, and you can easily pair it with time at Deepdale Camping & Rooms two and a half miles south, or The Norfolk Brickyard just a mile and a half away - both excellent spots for a Norfolk base. Don't come expecting buckets and spades chaos. Come for the light, the space, and the slow pace. It's exactly what it looks like, and that's the point.
