Burnett Park

Walk into Burnett Park and you're immediately struck by how quiet it is. This nature reserve near Banchory sits tucked away from the main drag, which means you'll actually hear the birds instead of traffic. The woodland paths wind through mature trees and riverside sections where you can spot roe deer if you're lucky - though patience is required. The Dee runs through here, and in spring the whole place comes alive with nesting birds and fresh growth.

It's a proper spot for walkers wanting something low-key. Nothing dramatic, no dramatic viewpoints or scrambles, just good woodland tramping. Families with older kids will get decent value from it; younger ones might fidget after an hour. Serious birdwatchers should come during migration seasons when the place becomes genuinely interesting.

Timing-wise, allow one to two hours depending on which paths you take. There's no charge to access the reserve, which makes it excellent value. The best visits happen early morning or dusk when wildlife is most active.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Banchory Lodge is barely a mile away, Silverbank slightly further - this works as a decent half-day activity to break up your week. It's close enough for a morning walk before doing something else in Banchory itself. The reserve won't blow your mind, but it's a solid, peaceful walk through real Scottish woodland without the effort of hiking proper hills.
