Bunnet Stane and Maiden's Bower

Two massive standing stones rise from farmland near Kinross like sentinels from another age. Bunnet Stane and Maiden's Bower sit close enough to visit in one trip, though they're not dramatically theatrical - you won't find coach parties or visitor centres here. What you get instead is the real thing: Bronze Age monuments that have stood for four thousand years, accessible on foot across fields, with no barriers or interpretation boards softening the encounter.

Bunnet Stane is the taller of the pair, a genuine monolith that still commands the landscape despite its solitary setting. Maiden's Bower, nearby, tells a different story - part of what was likely a stone circle in prehistory. Walkers and history enthusiasts will find this worthwhile; small children might struggle with the hike to reach them and the lack of obvious activity once you arrive. Allow an hour or so from Kinross town, depending on parking and field conditions.

They're free to visit, though the walk across private farmland requires respecting access rights - you'll want to check locally before setting out. Best tackled as part of a wider Perthshire ramble rather than a standalone trip. If you're based at Wild Goose Glamping or Gallowhill, both within five or six miles, these stones make a proper morning's outing when combined with other local walks. Moody and atmospheric on overcast days, genuinely moving if you're into prehistoric Britain. Not a mainstream attraction, but that's rather the point.
