Bunker's Park Open Space

The open grassland at Bunker's Park stretches out surprisingly green for somewhere so close to Hemel Hempstead's edge. It's a proper nature reserve rather than a manicured country park - the kind of place where you actually see what's growing rather than what's been planted for effect.

What you get here is straightforward: open fields, some woodland, and paths that let you wander without feeling herded. Bird-watchers come regularly, and in spring the wildflowers make a decent showing. It's the sort of spot where you can spend an hour or three depending on whether you're just after a quick leg-stretch or genuinely interested in what lives here.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit lean on attractions - there's no playground or visitor centre, so boredom can set in fast if the novelty of "looking at nature" wears thin. But if your crew enjoys exploring, spotting insects, or you're keen on photography, it's well worth the drive from wherever you're staying.

If you're camping nearby - and there are several decent options within a few miles like Fuzzy's Farm or Highridge Farm with their shepherd huts - this makes an easy morning or late-afternoon visit to break up camp time. It's free to access and there are no formal opening hours to worry about, though sensible daylight visits are obviously better. The reserve works best as part of a broader park holiday rather than a destination in itself, but as a local green space it does its job properly.
