Bull Meadow Park

Wetland walks don't usually get me excited, but Bull Meadow Park near Exeter is the sort of place that makes you actually want to stop and look at things. It's a proper nature reserve, the kind where the birds outnumber the visitors and you can hear yourself think - which is rare anywhere within four miles of a city.

The whole point here is the wetland habitat. Depending on the season, you'll spot reed warblers, water voles if you're lucky, and various dragonfly species that frankly look like they've been designed by someone on an LSD trip. The paths are well-maintained and flat enough that you won't be cursing your trainer choice halfway round. Bring binoculars though - without them you're just watching reeds sway.

It's ideal for keen birdwatchers and families who don't mind a bit of standing still and waiting. Kids get restless if you can't point something exciting out every five minutes, so pick a good season - spring migration or early summer when the place is properly alive. Allow an hour minimum, two if you're serious about it. Free to visit, which is one of the few things I'll unambiguously recommend about Devon's overpriced leisure options.

If you're staying at Devon Heaven Hideaways nearby - the glamping place with the hot tubs - this fills an hour of your morning nicely before you head back for breakfast. It's not the sort of place that'll change your life, but it's genuinely peaceful and genuinely free, which counts for something.
