Bude Canal

The canal at Bude cuts through town like a proper working waterway, not some museum piece. Built in the early 1800s to shift slate and granite inland, it's a 2-mile stretch of quiet water that locals actually use - you'll spot kayakers, paddleboarders, and the odd fishing boat pottering about. Walk the towpath and it becomes clear why people settled here: the canal connects to the sea at a lock, creating this oddly peaceful corridor right through the middle of everything.

It's lovely for a stroll, especially if you've already done the beaches around Bude. The water's surprisingly clean, the banks are lined with trees, and there's real charm in watching boats pass through the lock gates. Kids won't need much persuading to walk it once - expect maybe forty minutes to an hour for the full route. You get glimpses of the hills inland and a sense of Bude's working history that the seafront doesn't quite offer.

If you're staying at Wooda Farm Holiday Park or Atlantic Surf Pods, the canal is your quietest alternative to beach days. Free to walk, free to explore. Mornings are best - fewer families with pushchairs clogging the path, and you might actually see a heron fishing. It won't blow your mind, but it's a solid half-day break from coastal scenery, and it shows you Bude beyond the surf spots and ice creams.
