Buckler's Hard

You walk down a Georgian high street that feels genuinely frozen in time - wide enough for 18th-century timber merchants to conduct business, narrow enough that you can almost smell the sawdust and shipbuilders' sweat. Buckler's Hard, on the Beaulieu River near Southampton, was built as a planned village in the 1770s to construct naval vessels, and the museum explains why with proper detail. The Maritime Museum occupies period cottages and tells the story through exhibits on the boats built here (including ships that fought at Trafalgar) and the lives of the people who made them.

It's genuinely interesting if you care about naval history or industrial heritage, though I won't pretend the exhibits are flashy - they're thoughtful rather than showy. Kids under eight might get restless after 45 minutes; older ones with interest in history will spend two hours easily. The real charm is the walk itself down that high street, then wandering to the river and the boat slipway where it all happened. The location matters - you're on the edge of the New Forest, so it combines well with either woodland walks or a stay at one of the nearby sites like Parkdean Resorts Thorness Bay or Lepe Beach Campsite if you're based on the Isle of Wight side.

Entry isn't free but won't break the bank. Go on a quiet weekday rather than summer Saturdays - the village works better when you're not queuing.
