Buckle Wood

Walk into Buckle Wood and you're immediately swallowed by proper woodland - the kind where light filters through in dusty beams and the forest floor is thick with leaf litter. It's a genuine escape from the Monmouthshire countryside, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. The trees are mature and densely packed, creating that cathedral-like feeling you get in old forests. Paths wind through without being over-engineered, so there's a real sense of exploration even on a short visit.

This is best suited to walkers and families who don't need a destination - the appeal is the walk itself, not a viewpoint or attraction at the end. Children aged five and up will manage most routes fine, though younger ones might find it a bit too much. Allow an hour to ninety minutes for a proper meander. It's free to access, which is always welcome.

Geographically, Buckle Wood sits a few miles north of Lydney, making it a good half-day stop if you're based at Forest and Wye Valley Caravan and Camping Site or Penhein Glamping - both excellent bases for exploring the wider Forest of Dean and Wye Valley region. The woodland feels quieter and more intimate than the major attractions, so it's worth the short drive if you want breathing space away from busier walks. Spring and autumn offer the best light and manageable ground conditions.
