Buckingham Golf Club

You'll need a handicap certificate or an invitation from a member to play here - this isn't a municipal course where you can just turn up with your clubs. Buckingham Golf Club is a proper private members' club just outside the market town of Buckingham, and it's taken seriously by the people who belong to it.

The course itself is an 18-hole affair set across typical Oxfordshire countryside, all rolling fairways and tree-lined greens. If you're a keen golfer staying at one of the nearby parks - Barton Hill Farm is only 3.5 miles away, or Embers Camping at Claydon if you prefer a campsite - and you've got the right credentials, it's worth ringing ahead to arrange a round. The club does occasionally welcome visitors if you're a member elsewhere with a handicap to prove it.

Non-golfers won't find much here. There's no clubhouse cafe open to the public, no walking trails, nothing casual about it. It's purely for those who play. If you're a golfer with the required handicap, though, it's a solid Oxfordshire course without being spectacular - well-maintained greens, fair challenges, good pace of play. Allow four hours for a round.

For a golfing holiday in the area, you're well positioned if you're camping at Embers - they're five and a half miles away - though you'll need to sort membership access first. Phone them direct on the club line to check current visitor policies before you book your caravan.
