Bryn

Bryn is one of those peaks that sneaks up on you in Powys - nothing dramatic, but a proper little walk with decent views across Mid Wales if the weather plays ball. It's the sort of hill that rewards you without demanding too much, which makes it ideal for families who fancy getting out without committing to an all-day expedition.

The summit itself is nothing fancy - no cairn to queue for, no trig point to photograph - but that's rather the point. You get a genuine sense of being somewhere rather than just ticking a box. The Beacon Beacons massif dominates the horizon, and on a clear day the rippling valleys towards Brecon are genuinely worth the leg work. Allow a couple of hours there and back depending on your fitness and how many stops you make for snacks.

Walkers with young kids or those just getting back into hiking will find Bryn approachable without being patronising. It's the sort of walk where you'll actually see the landscape change as you gain height, rather than slogging for hours to reach a windswept lump.

If you're staying at Pencelli Castle or Cefn Cantref nearby, this works brilliantly as a morning outing before heading elsewhere. The campgrounds are close enough that you can be on the hill within twenty minutes. Weather's your main concern - cloud can roll in fast in this part of Wales, so check the forecast. Spring through early autumn is your sweet spot. Free to walk, obviously, and open whenever you fancy turning up.
