Brownes Hospital

The moment you round the corner onto Broad Street in Stamford, this medieval almshouse stops you dead. Built in 1475, Brownes Hospital is one of England's finest surviving examples of late Gothic architecture - all honey-coloured stone and those distinctive tall chimneys that catch the light beautifully at dusk.

It's genuinely small and intimate. You're looking at a courtyard arrangement with a chapel at one end, where the original residents (poor folk and pilgrims, mostly) would have slept in individual cells. The whole thing feels remarkably intact for its age. Unlike many heritage sites that have been mucked about with, this hasn't been over-restored into sterility. The worn flagstones and creaking floorboards actually add to it.

History enthusiasts will find themselves spending a proper hour here, reading the board about medieval charity and how these places actually functioned. Families with younger kids might manage twenty minutes before restlessness sets in - there's not a huge amount of interactive stuff, so it depends on your children's attention span. Walkers passing through Stamford will appreciate the architectural detail and the chance to duck inside during a rain shower.

The real win is that it's completely free and sits right in the heart of a beautiful stone town full of cafes and pubs.
