About Broughty Castle Museum

The fortress squats on a rocky outcrop facing the Firth of Tay, all weathered sandstone and commanding views. Broughty Castle has been battering these waters since the 15th century, though what you'll find inside today is a proper working museum rather than just a picturesque ruin to walk around.

Inside, the five floors tell the story of Dundee's maritime past - shipping, whaling, the lot. There's a decent gun collection because this was a military stronghold, and the views from the top are genuinely excellent on a clear day. The climb is steep but manageable, and the upper galleries give you a proper sense of why someone built a fortress exactly here.

It's free, which immediately makes it worth an hour of your time. History types will appreciate the period rooms and artefacts; kids don't usually complain about towers and cannons. The museum isn't vast though - if you're expecting a full day's entertainment, you'll be disappointed. Budget ninety minutes, two hours maximum.

Tayport sits just along the coast, and both Tayport Links Caravan Park and Larick Campsite are within walking distance. If you're based at either, this makes an easy morning visit before heading elsewhere. The castle does what it says on the tin - a solid local museum with genuine character and no entry fee. Pack layers because the wind off the Firth is relentless, even when the sun's out.
