Broom Wood

The woodland floor at Broom Wood is carpeted in moss and leaf litter, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's a proper forest walk near Alresford, the sort of spot locals know about but tourists often miss entirely. The trees form a dense canopy overhead, so even on bright days there's a cool, shadowy quality that makes it feel like stepping into another world for an hour or so.

This is brilliant for anyone who wants a genuine forest experience without the crowds. Families with reasonably confident walkers will enjoy it - there's something deeply satisfying about picking your way through woodland, spotting birds and the occasional patch of wildflowers depending on season. Bring wellies if it's been wet; the ground gets boggy in places. You're looking at a leisurely couple of hours here, maybe three if you're in no rush.

What makes it work well is the proximity to proper holiday bases. Woodlands Camping sits just 2.5 miles away, and if you want something with more amenities, Hampshire Hills (formerly Two Hoots) is under five miles off - both are rated highly by people who actually stay there. You could easily combine a morning here with the nearby attractions of Alresford itself, which has a decent high street and the Watercress Line if the weather turns.

It's free and accessible year-round, though autumn is undoubtedly the best time to visit when the canopy is at its most dramatic.
