Brompton Beck

The beck itself is the thing here - a proper little watercourse that winds through North Yorkshire countryside just outside Malton, creating one of those rare spots where you can actually see what a healthy stream looks like. Clear water, proper habitat, the whole works. It's a nature reserve, so the focus is on letting the place do its thing rather than laying on attractions, which some visitors find refreshing and others find a bit underwhelming depending on what they're after.

Walkers get the most from Brompton Beck. The terrain is accessible without being boring, and there's genuine wildlife to spot if you're patient - birds especially, plus the usual suspects of small mammals if you're quiet about it. You won't need more than an hour or so unless you're the type who sits by water sketching, in which case half a day disappears without you noticing. Bring binoculars. Don't expect visitor facilities or cafes.

What makes it work for a park holiday in the area is the location. You're only a few miles from Lahtle Wood Glamping and Vale of Pickering Caravan Park, both excellent bases, so Brompton Beck works as a morning wander before heading elsewhere - or a proper walk if you've got the energy. It's free, naturally. Go early or late in the day if you want solitude; midday can get a bit pokey with dog walkers.
