Brockley Wood

Walking into Brockley Wood near Crawley feels like stepping out of the commuter belt entirely, even though you're barely a mile from the motorway sprawl. It's proper woodland - dense canopy, ancient oaks, the works - and it's free to explore at your own pace.

The trails wind through mixed broadleaf forest with enough varied terrain to keep it interesting without being punishing. You'll find yourself on narrow paths hemmed in by bluebells in spring, or crunching through leaf litter when autumn hits. The wood feels genuinely wild in patches, which is saying something this close to West Sussex's built-up areas.

It's ideal for walkers wanting a proper green space without the manicured-park feel. Families with reasonably confident kids will get a good hour out of it; anything younger and you're wrestling with buggies on uneven ground. Birdwatchers will appreciate the canopy cover. Local history types won't find much to sink their teeth into - it's about the woodland itself, not interpretive signs.

Allow two to three hours if you're not rushing. There's no admission charge that we can find, though parking might be a small fee depending on access points. It pairs well with either of the nearby parks - the Gatwick Campsite's less than a mile away if you're base-camping, or Worth Forest Glamping if you want something with more amenities. Either way, Brockley Wood makes a solid morning or afternoon jaunt when the weather's decent.
