Broadward Motte

You'll spot it from the road near Craven Arms - a distinctive earthen mound rising abruptly from the Shropshire countryside. Broadward Motte is what remains of a Norman fortification, probably built in the 11th century, though it's been left to the elements since then. The mound itself is the main feature, roughly conical, and you can walk right up to it for views across the surrounding farmland. Not much else is left - no stones, no buildings, no interpretation boards - which is either refreshingly honest or slightly underwhelming depending on your expectations.

History buffs will get the most from it, particularly those interested in medieval military architecture. The motte-and-bailey concept is straightforward enough: the mound would have been crowned with a wooden or stone fortress, the bailey (courtyard) spread out around it below. Walking the perimeter gives you a sense of the scale and purpose, even if your imagination has to do the heavy lifting. It's free and takes maybe twenty minutes unless you're the sort who sits down to sketch and ponder.

Craven Arms itself is a small market town, handy for supplies but not a destination in itself. The real appeal comes if you're camping nearby - Shropshire Hills Glamping and Wayside Camping are both within a few miles - and want a quick historical detour between walks in the surrounding hills. On its own, it's more of a layover than a reason to visit. Worth five minutes if you're passing, but don't plan your Shropshire trip around it.
