Broadward Hall Motte

A grassy mound rising abruptly from the forest floor near Craven Arms - that's Broadward Hall Motte, a genuine Norman fortification that's survived over 900 years of Shropshire weather. You're looking at the earthwork remains of a motte-and-bailey castle, the kind William the Conqueror's lot threw up across England to keep the locals in check. The mound itself is the impressive bit, maybe thirty feet high, surrounded by the ghost of what would have been a defensive ditch. Walking around it takes perhaps twenty minutes unless you're the type to sit on top sketching the view.

Historically minded visitors will find it quietly satisfying - there's something about standing on a Norman defensive position that makes the history feel tangible rather than abstract. Children under eight might find it a bit "just a hill, really" after the initial scramble up, but older kids who've engaged with medieval history tend to get more from it. The real value is combining it with other walks in the Shropshire Hills - this isn't a destination in itself, more a proper addition to a broader ramble through the area.

It's free, it's accessible year-round, and the forest setting keeps it cool even on warmer days. Parking is the tricky bit - you'll need to find a spot along local lanes and walk in. If you're based at Shropshire Hills Glamping or Wayside Camping nearby, it makes an excellent morning out, breaking up what might otherwise be a fairly quiet camping weekend. Best visited after rain when the earth's darker and the mound shows its shape more clearly against the grass.
