Broadmire Plantation

The walk through Broadmire Plantation is proper woodland stuff - tall conifers pressing in on either side, the kind of place where the light gets filtered green and it feels like you've stepped out of Appleby-in-Westmorland entirely. It's a working forest, so don't expect manicured trails; you'll find yourself on rough tracks with the occasional muddy patch that demands decent boots.

What makes it worth the trek is the silence. Not eerie quiet, just the absence of traffic noise and people. The plantation sits in that borderland between the Eden Valley and the higher Pennine fells, so on a clear day you can feel the landscape's bones underneath. Families with older kids and decent stamina will get the most from it; younger ones might find an hour enough before restlessness sets in.

There's no visitor centre, no facilities to speak of. Free to access, which is refreshing. Allow two to three hours if you're doing a proper loop and taking it slowly. Spring brings bluebells through some sections if you time it right, though the canopy gets dense by summer.

If you're staying at Wild Rose Holiday Park nearby, it's an easy drive to blow off some energy. The plantation works as a half-day addition to exploring the Eden Valley proper, rather than a destination on its own. Go for the walk and the breathing space, not for views or spectacle.
