Broadfield Park

Head to Broadfield Park if you're after proper woodland and wetland walking without the crowds that plague the South Downs. It's a nature reserve just outside Crawley, and honestly, it's the kind of place that rewards a lazy Saturday afternoon rather than a rushed visit.

The park itself is a mix of open grassland, reed beds, and mature woodland - exactly what you'd want if you're hoping to spot something interesting without needing binoculars and a field guide. Paths wind through different habitats, and depending on the season you might catch dragonflies by the water or birds moving through the trees. It's low-key stuff, but that's rather the point.

Families with younger children will find it manageable - the walking is easy enough, though there's not much in the way of play equipment or facilities, so come prepared. Serious birdwatchers will get more out of it than casual strollers, though even then it's not a destination reserve. Allow an hour or so, or extend it if you're genuinely keen.

If you're staying at Worth Forest Glamping nearby - which is properly lovely - you could easily pair this with a morning walk before heading somewhere more ambitious for the afternoon. For caravan folk at the Gatwick site, it's a decent leg-stretch without needing to drive far. Free to access, as reserves tend to be, and open year-round. Best in spring and early summer when things are actually happening.
