About Broad Water
Walkers get the most from it. There's a decent circuit round the water itself, nothing strenuous, taking a good hour if you're paying attention to the wildlife. Bring binoculars if you're into birds - the reedbed is genuinely excellent for spotting warblers and the occasional osprey passing through. The paths are flat and well-trodden, manageable for families with older kids, though it's not a playground destination. Toddlers might find an hour of "walk and look at water" a bit thin.
Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though there's no visitor infrastructure to speak of - no cafe, no toilets that I could spot. Go early or late in the day to avoid other people. It works brilliantly as a half-morning detour if you're camping at Church Farm Ardeley, five miles away. Combine it with a walk around Stevenage's town centre or a longer ramble through the surrounding farmland. Winter and spring are best - the water's livelier when the light's lower and the birds are more active. Worth the detour if you like observing nature without the crowds.
