Brisley Woods

There's something rather restorative about walking through Brisley Woods, even if you've only got an afternoon to spare. This Norfolk nature reserve sits just east of Fakenham, and it's the sort of place where you actually hear yourself think - no gift shops, no crowds fighting over viewpoints, just woodland doing what woodland does best.

The reserve is small enough that you won't need hiking boots or a packed lunch, but substantial enough that you'll feel properly immersed rather than like you've popped round the corner. You get mixed woodland with established trees, the occasional clearing, and if you're lucky with timing, decent bird spotting. It's genuinely good for families with younger kids who find big walks tedious, and walkers wanting something low-key between more ambitious outings. The paths are manageable without being boring.

You could combine it with a wander round Fakenham itself if you're stuck for a rainy afternoon activity. Allow a couple of hours maximum unless you're really into your botany.

Access and facilities vary seasonally, so worth checking ahead, but the appeal lies in its unpretentious nature - it's a proper working nature reserve, not a manicured visitor attraction. If you want a gentle woodland walk without the National Trust car park experience, this delivers.
