Brisley Green

A proper slice of Norfolk's quiet countryside, Brisley Green is a nature reserve that rewards those willing to leave the main roads behind. East of Fakenham, it's the sort of place where you'll actually hear birdsong rather than traffic - which is saying something in Norfolk.

The reserve itself is fairly intimate in scale, which means you won't get lost or overwhelmed. The main draw is the mixture of woodland and wetland habitat, so expect to see waders, wildfowl, and if you're lucky, some of the rarer species that make Norfolk a birdwatcher's destination. There's a network of paths through the site, though conditions can be boggy depending on rainfall - proper boots aren't optional here.

It's best suited to keen naturalists and birdwatchers rather than families after a casual stroll. Allow a couple of hours if you're serious about spotting things; thirty minutes if you just fancy a gentle walk through trees and past water. Spring and autumn are your best bets for migrant birds, though winter can be rewarding too.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Norfolk Coast Caravans and Camping or Wild Meadow Glamping - Brisley Green makes a worthwhile detour on a day exploring the quieter corners of mid-Norfolk. It won't wow everyone, but if you appreciate wetland wildlife and don't mind muddy paths, it's well worth an hour of your time.
