Brinklow Castle

The mound rises abruptly from the Warwickshire flatlands near Rugby, commanding views across fields that haven't changed much in a thousand years. Brinklow Castle is what remains of a Norman motte-and-bailey fortress - essentially a steep earthwork topped with the ghost of what was once a wooden palisade and keep. It's brilliant for history types and anyone who enjoys rambling across open country with purpose. The walk takes thirty minutes from the car park, and the view from the top justifies the climb. Kids will either find it thrilling or tedious depending on their age and tolerance for "just a big hill". Admission is free, which feels right - there's nothing stopping you from poking about any day of the week.
