Bridgford Park

Three miles south of Nottingham, Bridgford Park is a proper nature reserve - the kind of place where you might actually spot something interesting rather than just walk round a manicured loop. It's woodland and grassland mixed together, which sounds ordinary until you realise how rare that combination is these days. The park works well if you want a half-hour ramble between other things, or if you're genuinely into identifying birds and plants. Families with young kids will get an hour out of it, maybe two if they're the type to stop and look at insects. Older walkers tend to find it more rewarding than people rushing through.

Access from Nottingham is straightforward - it's close enough for an afternoon visit without eating into your whole day. The nearest caravan sites are Nottingham Camping and Caravanning Club Site just three miles away, or Little Bunny Retreat if you fancy something with more glamping vibes. Neither will require much of a drive to reach the park. I'd suggest going mid-week if possible, as weekends bring Nottingham day-trippers, which rather defeats the point of a nature reserve.

Bringing binoculars is worth the bother. The reserve attracts decent numbers of migrating birds in spring and autumn, and the woodland holds a decent variety year-round. Summer can feel a bit quiet - just midges and the usual woodland birds. Free access, obviously, and no fixed hours that I'm aware of, so you're not tied to opening times. It's low-key and unpretentious, which is exactly what a nature reserve should be.
