Bridge on the Ewe River

The single-arch stone bridge spanning the Ewe River is one of those Scottish landmarks that catches you off guard. You're driving through the Highlands near Gairloch, the landscape's already stunning, and then this elegant grey structure appears - understated, proper beautiful, and somehow both ancient and timeless.

It's the sort of bridge that makes you stop the car. The water below runs clear and peaty, with hills rising behind it. From certain angles the reflection doubles the whole thing. In spring and early summer, the light's exceptional here - soft and generous in a way you don't get further south.

Walkers gravitate here naturally because it sits on accessible routes through the area, and the bridge itself makes a decent turnaround point or landmark on a longer loop. You're not looking at a major detour if you're based at Sands Caravan & Camping just up the road - the site's only 6 kilometres away, making this a proper morning walk territory.

There's no visitor centre or cafe, which is rather the point. It's a genuine piece of Highland infrastructure that's been doing its job for centuries, not a destination hammered with signage and facilities. Thirty minutes to walk down to it, stand about, take some photographs, and walk back.

Best visited when the light's low - early morning or late afternoon in the warmer months. The bridge won't take your breath away like Ben Eighe might, but it's worth the detour if you're in Gairloch anyway. Real, uncomplicated, and quietly rather lovely.
