Bridehead Lake

The water at Bridehead Lake sits still and dark, ringed by trees that make you feel properly removed from the world despite being just outside Dorchester. It's a modest affair - nothing like those Instagrammable reservoirs you see in the Cotswolds - but that's rather the point. You get decent walking around the perimeter, maybe forty minutes if you're not in a rush, with paths that wind through woodland and open up onto views of the water now and then.

History buffs will note this is Thomas Hardy territory, and you're never far from the landscape that inspired his novels. The lake itself feels ancient, though it's actually quite managed - there's a sense of stillness that works either way. Fishermen do come here regularly, so if you're hoping for total solitude on a summer Saturday, plan differently.

It's free to visit and the car park requires no faffing about. Bring proper shoes if the ground's been wet; it gets boggy in patches. The walk suits families with reasonably fit kids aged seven upward - younger ones might struggle with the uneven ground. You won't need more than ninety minutes total, making it a cracking half-day addition to a base at one of the nearby touring parks like Bagwell Farm or Higher Moor Farm.

Don't come expecting drama or facilities - there's a car park and that's your lot. Come for the quiet water, the Dorset woodland, and the chance to stretch your legs between exploring Dorchester itself or heading toward the Jurassic Coast.
