Brickhouse Wood

Just outside Battle in Sussex, Brickhouse Wood is the sort of forest that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick lap. It's dense woodland with decent paths that wind through mixed trees - proper walking territory with enough shade to make it pleasant even on warmer days. You'll find yourself in that green-tunnel feeling that good English woodland does so well, surrounded by ferns and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you came.

The wood itself isn't a spectacle - no dramatic viewpoints or grand features to photograph. But that's partly the appeal. It's genuinely peaceful, the kind of place walkers and anyone after a genuine woodland experience will actually use rather than tick off. Families with restless kids might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes or so, since there's not much to see beyond trees, but for anyone who just wants to walk and think, it's proper lovely.

Being so close to Battle, it sits well within a broader park holiday in the area. Beech Estate Campsite is barely two miles away, making this an obvious choice for a morning or afternoon walk if you're camping nearby. Seven Acre Woods is another option at three and a half miles if you want multiple bases for exploring. No entrance fees or fancy facilities to worry about - just turn up and walk. Best to go when it's not waterlogged, which in Sussex means pretty much anywhere but winter.
