Brick Dubs

Down by the water at Maryport, there's a bit of industrial heritage that doesn't shout about itself. Brick Dubs is essentially what remains of the old brick and tile works that once powered this corner of Cumbria - you're looking at remnants of Victorian manufacturing alongside the harbour. It's not a grand visitor attraction with gift shops and interpretive panels. What you get instead is the raw bones of a working site that shaped the region.

Historically minded visitors will find it genuinely interesting. The brick industry was enormous here, and Maryport built its prosperity on shipping those bricks down the coast. Walk around and you can read the landscape - the kilns, the processing areas, the way everything was arranged to move goods efficiently to the docks. It gives proper context to why Maryport exists at all.

Kids might find it a bit sparse if you're expecting hands-on stuff, but if they're interested in how things actually get made, it's educational without being preachy. Photographers like the texture and weathered industrial aesthetics.

Allow an hour maximum, depending on your curiosity. Check opening arrangements locally before you go - these sites sometimes have limited access. It works well as part of a broader Maryport wander, especially if you're staying at Harbour Side Caravan Park or Greysouthen. The seafront has other attractions worth your time, and the brick works sits naturally into that bigger picture rather than standing alone.
